Why This Journal Exists
When I first imagined The Duchess of Kooky, I wasn’t thinking about building a brand or creating a business.
I simply wanted a place to collect the things that made life feel beautiful.
A photograph that made me stop and look a little longer.
A quiet walk beneath old trees.
A cozy coffee shop on a rainy afternoon.
A story tucked inside an ordinary day.
I’ve always believed that every photograph has a story behind it. Sometimes it’s about the place itself, but more often it’s about how that moment made me feel. Those are the stories I wanted to remember, and the ones I hoped might resonate with someone else, too.
This journal became a place where I could slow down, pay attention, and celebrate the beauty that so often hides in everyday life.
The name The Duchess of Kooky has a story of its own.
Growing up, my youngest sister affectionately called me Kooky, while my mom and stepdad have long called me Duchess. Somewhere between those two nicknames—and my lifelong fascination with British history, Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Diana, and the pages of countless historical novels—a name was born that felt perfectly, wonderfully me.
Elegant.
A little whimsical.
And just a bit delightfully askew.
When this journal first began, photography was at its heart. I wanted a place to share the images I captured and the stories that accompanied them. Over time, though, life has a way of opening unexpected doors.
What began as a photography journal slowly became something more.
It became a place for family history and my growing connection to my Sicilian roots.
A place to write about quiet moments, meaningful places, creativity, and the small discoveries that shape who we become.
Today, you’ll also find watercolor paintings, digital art, seasonal living, tarot, and whatever else sparks my curiosity. None of those things were part of the original plan, but they’ve become part of the journey.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that we don’t always know where the path will lead. Sometimes we simply follow what lights us up, one small step at a time.
That’s what this journal is.
Not a guide.
Not a collection of perfectly curated moments.
Just an honest record of a creative life that continues to grow and change.
So whether you’ve come here because you love photography, beautiful old trees, watercolor paintings, family stories, Italy, quiet mornings, or simply enjoy wandering through someone else’s beautifully imperfect world…
I’m so glad you’re here.
Pour yourself a cup of coffee or tea, stay awhile, and make yourself at home.
This is my beautifully askew corner of the world, and I’m so glad you’ve found it.
Wishing you a little everyday magic,
Lulu VonBelle
